Our Mission

Drake University's Vietnamese-American Student Association (V.A.S.A) is founded to promote understanding and preservation of the Vietnamese culture, to unite students of the Vietnamese heritage and those who are interested in the Vietnamese culture, and to provide opportunities for students to socialize and establish lasting friendships with other students at Drake University through fun and engaging events and activities throughout the year.

About V.A.S.A

The Vietnamese-American Student Association was founded by Than T. Pham (Drake 2009) in Fall 2005 because there was a need for such an association in the Des Moines area, and especially for Drake University.  He felt that there was something missing - Drake University needed a Vietnamese Student Association because there were other Vietnamese Student Association around Iowa such as the Iowa State Vietnamese Student Association (V.S.A.) and the University of Iowa Vietnamese Student Association (V.S.A.).  Drake needed their own Vietnamese Student association.  Thus, he began proposing to the University that the association gets created and was very successful during his first year in office (He served two years as president of VASA).

Every year, V.A.S.A. member participates in events such as fundraising money for the poor (i.e. Viet Hope), helping out in the Des Moines community, Drake Relay street painting competition, Relay for Life (provided by Drake), Asian New Year (TET), and many more.  The biggest event for our members, as well as other Universitie's V.S.A., is the Asian New Year - TET.  For this event, everyone is welcome and the whole University, family and friends, the community, and people outside of Des Moines come together to celebrate Asia's biggest holiday.  Guests can enjoy the traditional dances, dragon dance, raffles, presentations, and Vietnamese cuisine provided by the University and V.A.S.A. members.

Members also engage in their own fun activities throughout the school year such as Halloween (pumpkin carving and party), Christmas dance, picnic, summer get-together, etc..  The association is growing bigger every year and new members come everyday.  We welcome everyone to join!
